Why does my dog yawn when it isn't tired?

Dogs yawn when they are sleepy, but a yawn in the middle of something exciting or uncomfortable is often a calming signal, a way to take the edge off.

What it usually means

Pawfect's tables list the yawn among a dog's displacement signals: self-calming behaviours used to cope with stress or uncertainty. It sits alongside lip licking, shaking off, sniffing the ground, turning the head away, lifting a paw, sneezing and scratching.

With a tucked tail, a low posture and ears back, a yawn is part of the pattern the tables use for an anxious dog. Context does the rest: a yawn at the vet, during a telling-off or in a child's tight hug reads very differently from one on the sofa at bedtime.

Easy to mix up

  • Plain tiredness. A sleepy yawn comes with a loose body, slow movements and often a stretch.
  • Excitement. Some dogs yawn while waiting for a walk or a game. Check the ears and tail: loose and forward is anticipation, low and back is worry.

Look at the whole body

No single signal tells the whole story. Before settling on a reading, look at the tail, ears, eyes, mouth and posture together, and at what is happening around your pet.

Signals the tables often see alongside this one

  • Tucked tail
  • Low posture
  • Ears back
  • Lip lick

See it on your own pet

Point Pawfect at your dog or cat and it picks out the tails, ears, eyes and postures from these guides, then plays them back as a playful caption you can keep.
